Causes for the Civil War
Slavery was a main cause of the Civil War and in fact every other cause someone involved this issue too. Slavery in the new territories, slavery and the government, Bleeding Kansas, and a divided union are all causes of the Civil War. The Civil War errupted in 1861 because of the cession of the states in the South greatly separated the Union and Americans got to the point where there had to be something done with these issues. It was evident to all that war was the last resort. Seeing how important the issue of slavery was to everyone I don't know why they should have tried to resolve it or go to war sooner. 1861 seems too late. But I guess better late than never. Slavery on the other hand would have died out eventually, but it could have taken many more years than 1865.

Slavery clearly was the underlining and major cause of the civil war, however the justification upon a civil war between pro and anti slavery states was neccesary. As a young country, we did not have past events similar to this one to model our decisions after. War was evident because of the rising abolitionist party and the eventual election of Abraham Lincoln. Yes, the war was at the expence of hundreds of thousands of lives, however, the issue of slavery couldn't have been left on the note of 'it would have died out eventually'. This possible notion might have been true but what if it hadn't been? What if slavery continued to grow and grow until our modern day country is full of slaves from all different walks of life. The effects from a numbers perspective could have easily been far greater than 600,000 men that lost their lives. If good men didn't stand up for what they believed in, this case being the emancipation of good, hardworking people, than our country would have been a very dark and misguided place where it was okay for one man to own another. The risk of this probable epidemic, for the ethical prosperity of the nation as a whole , was worth the lives lost.
